Earth Hour
Saturday, March 28, 2026
Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wildlife Fund that encourages individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour, typically from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the last Saturday of March, as a symbol of commitment to the planet.
History
Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007 when 2.2 million people turned off their lights. It has grown into one of the world's largest grassroots environmental movements, with participation from hundreds of millions in over 180 countries and territories.
How It's Celebrated
People switch off lights and electronic devices for one hour, often hosting candlelit dinners, stargazing events, or acoustic gatherings. Landmarks around the world go dark. The hour is used to reflect on environmental issues and make commitments to sustainable living.
