History
The Dominican Republic achieved independence from Haiti on February 27, 1844, though the territory had been under Spanish rule since Columbus arrived in 1492. The eastern side of Hispaniola was colonized by Spain, while Haiti controlled the western portion following Haitian independence in 1804. After Haitian forces briefly took control of the entire island in 1822, Dominican nationalists led by Juan Pablo Duarte organized the Trinitaria movement for independence. On February 27, 1844, Dominican patriots proclaimed independence and drove out Haitian forces. The new republic faced ongoing conflict with Haiti and periods of Spanish reoccupation. The Dominican Republic's independence established a separate Hispanic nation on Hispaniola, distinct from its French-speaking neighbor. February 27 commemorates Dominican Republic Independence Day and the establishment of the Dominican nation as an independent state in the Caribbean.
