Death of San Martin Holiday

Jose San Martin is one of the founding fathers of Argentina which is why the country celebrates the date of his death on the third Monday of August. San Martin is considered one of the Liberators of Spanish South America. In 2026, Death of San Martin falls on Monday 17 August. The holiday will be on Monday 16 August in 2027. Jose de San Martin was born in Yapeyu in Argentina, but left the country at an early age when his father was transferred to Spain. He enrolled in the Spanish Army at the age of 11 and participated in several African campaigns. He returned to Argentina in 1812 and fought for the independence of Argentina from Spain. He was responsible for forming several armies as well as a plan to defeat Spanish forces in Argentina in 1814. He led the Army of the Andes to liberate Chile and Peru as well. He spent his last years in France. During the 1848 revolution, San Martin was aged, almost blind and with many health problems. He died on August 17, 1850 just a few days after learning that Argentina was victorious against the Anglo-French blockade. He was buried in the crypt of the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Boulogne, but he had requested in his will that his remains be taken to Buenos Aires. However, the rebellion of Justo Jose de Urquiza delayed the removal of his remains, which were ultimately only returned to Buenos Aires until 1880.
