Easter is one of the most widely celebrated holiday seasons across Australia. In all states and territories, Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays that create a 4-day long weekend. In 2027, Good Friday falls on 26 March, while Easter Sunday falls on 28 March. In 2028, Good Friday will be observed on 14 April. The date of Easter is partly dependent on the lunar cycle. Easter Sunday, also known as Resurrection Sunday, falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon that occurs on or after the March equinox. This puts Easter Sunday between the end of March and the end of April, depending on the year. This method for determining the date of Easter was first established in 325 AD at the Council of Nicaea, which took place in what is now modern-day Turkey. In total, Easter is a celebration that spans over a 50-day period. It begins with Ash Wednesday and ends with Easter Sunday with many Easter-related events in between. The Easter long weekend is the most anticipated of the year for millions of Australians with hotels, campsites and holiday rentals booked out months in advance, not to mention the busy roads and airports. But Easter is also one of the oldest of the Christian festivals and the most popular time of the year for Australians to go to church. The most common services are on Good Friday morning and Easter Sunday morning at churches of every variety and denomination. Good Friday is the beginning of the Australian Easter holiday long weekend and is the day when Christians commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. According to the Christian scriptures, Jesus lived and died during the first four decades of the 1st Century AD. The Bible, the key spiritual writings about the Christian faith, proclaims Jesus Christ to be God’s son who came to Earth to teach about God and to lead the way for people to find ‘salvation’ through Christ’s death and resurrection. Holy Saturday is the second day of the Easter weekend and is commemorated by Christians as the day Jesus Christ’s body lay in a borrowed tomb after his death the day before. Holy Saturday is also known, amongst other names, as Black Saturday or Easter Eve. Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from his tomb. This day is also known as Resurrection Sunday or Pascha. Churches are filled with people more than at any other time of year except perhaps Christmas, with songs and hymns sung and usually a Gospel presentation. Easter Monday is the last of the national public holidays relating to the Easter celebrations, and is effectively a replacement holiday for the public holiday that falls the previous day. Feast of St Paul's Shipwreck

The Feast of Saint Paul’s Shipwreck is a holiday unique to Malta because it was on Malta that the Apostle Paul was shipwrecked around the year A.D. 60. In 2027, Feast of St Paul's Shipwreck falls on Wednesday 10 February. The holiday will be on Thursday 10 February in 2028. The feast is kept on February 10th each year, and as Paul is the patron saint of Malta, it is a much-anticipated event. Out of dozens of “saint days” on the church calendar in Malta, the Feast of Saint Paul is one of only a handful that have the status of a national holiday. The account of Paul’s shipwreck and three-month, wintertime stay on Malta is found in the Bible’s Acts 27:27 through 28:11. He was being taken to Rome as a prisoner to eventually stand trial before Caesar. God let him know in advance he would be shipwrecked but would spare the lives of all on board, which promise was later kept and in answer to Paul’s prayers for their lives. The Bible says the storm was in the Adriatic Sea, though Malta borders the Ionian Sea, because in ancient times, the Adriatic’s boundaries were considered to extend much farther south. The ship broke up on the rocks near the shores of Malta, and all swam ashore. The local population greeted them, but thought he might be a murderer whom the “goddess of justice” had finally caught up with after he was bitten by a poisonous snake. After he lived, however, they supposed him to be, perhaps, a god. Paul, however, soon showed them it was God’s power at work in a mere man by healing the governor of the island, Publius, and many others who were sick or disabled among the island’s population. No doubt, Paul preached the Gospel to them as well, and when he left Malta, the inhabitants gave him all necessary supplies out of gratitude. The Feast of Saint Paul’s Shipwreck is kept at the “Parish Church of Saint Paul Shipwrecked” in Malta’s capital city of Valletta. It is also a day of processions and family get-togethers.
