History
Czechoslovakia declared independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire on October 28, 1918, following the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy after World War I. The new state was formed from Czech lands and Slovakia under the Pittsburgh Agreement. The founding of Czechoslovakia marked the realization of Czechoslovak national aspirations for self-determination after centuries of foreign rule. The country became a democratic republic between the wars but was forced to accept Nazi influence in 1938. After World War II, Czechoslovakia fell under Soviet communist control until the Velvet Revolution of 1989 restored democracy.
