— days to go
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a U.S. federal holiday honoring the contributions of American workers and the labor movement. It also unofficially signals the end of summer vacation season.
History
First celebrated with a parade in New York City in 1882 by labor unions. Made a federal holiday in 1894 after major strikes and violence. Intentionally positioned in September to distance it from the more radical International Workers' Day (May 1).
How It's Celebrated
Attend any local labor or union events, enjoy a final summer barbecue or trip with family, take advantage of sales, rest, and reflect on the value of work and workers' rights. Many communities still hold parades and festivals.
