In 1884, German. Colonization. Germany proclaims Kamerun as a protectorate marking the beginning of the colony era
History
Germany proclaimed Kamerun as a protectorate in 1884, establishing colonial rule over the region. German colonization brought infrastructure development but also forced labor and land appropriation from indigenous peoples. After World War I, German Kamerun was divided between France and Britain under League of Nations mandates in 1916. French Cameroon administered its portion while British Cameroon was split between Nigeria and the French zone. Post-World War II, French Cameroon gained independence on January 1, 1960, reuniting with British Cameroon in 1961 to form the Federal Republic of Cameroon. The holiday commemorates the establishment of the republic in 1972 when Cameroon became a unitary state.
