History

Cambodia gained independence from France on November 9, 1953, ending nearly a century of French colonial rule. The Kingdom of Cambodia was established as a French protectorate in 1863 following King Norodom's request for protection against neighboring Siam and Vietnam. During World War II, Japan occupied Cambodia but allowed French administration to continue. After the war, King Norodom Sihanouk led negotiations for complete independence from France, culminating in the Élysée Agreements. On November 9, 1953, Cambodia was declared fully independent, though it remained part of the French Union briefly before leaving. Cambodia's independence day marks the end of French colonization and the restoration of Khmer sovereignty over Angkor and the Mekong Delta. November 9 commemorates Cambodia's emergence as an independent kingdom under King Norodom Sihanouk.
