In 1396, Ottoman. Rule Begins. Bulgaria falls under the rule of the Ottoman Empire for nearly five centuries
History
Bulgaria fell under Ottoman rule in 1396 following the Battle of Nicopolis, beginning nearly five centuries of Ottoman domination. The occupation suppressed Bulgarian culture, language, and Orthodox Christian practices while imposing jizya tax on Christians. Multiple uprising attempts were suppressed, including the April Uprising of 1876 which resulted in massacre at Batak. The Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 brought liberation, with the Treaty of Berlin establishing the Principality of Bulgaria in 1878. Full de facto independence came in 1908 when Bulgaria declared complete sovereignty from Ottoman Empire. Liberation Day on March 3 commemorates the 1878 liberation and the establishment of modern Bulgaria.
