History
In June 1932, the Chaco War between Paraguay and Bolivia began due to territorial disputes over the Gran Chaco region, believed to contain oil. The Battle of Boquerón in September 1932 was one of the war's bloodiest engagements. Paraguay eventually won the war but suffered massive casualties that affected national development for decades. The war ended in 1935 with the Treaty of Buenos Aires, ceding most of the disputed territory to Paraguay. Victory Day commemorates the sacrifices made by Paraguayan soldiers and honors those who died in defense of the nation. The holiday serves as a reminder of the costs of conflict and the importance of peaceful dispute resolution.
