History

Bolivia declared independence from Spain on August 6, 1825, following the Spanish American wars of independence led by Simón Bolívar. The territory was part of the Inca Empire before Spanish conquest in the 16th century, and the Spanish established the rich mining center of Potosí. The city of La Paz became the seat of government, and the region was known as Upper Peru during colonial times. Simón Bolívar's campaigns liberated much of South America from Spanish rule, and Antonio José de Sucre led the decisive Battle of Ayacucho in 1824. Bolivia's independence was formally declared on August 6, 1825, with Sucre as the first president. Bolivia is named after Simón Bolívar and has been landlocked since losing territory to Chile in the War of the Pacific (1879-1884). August 6 commemorates Bolivia's independence day and the country's emergence as a sovereign Andean nation.
