In 1907, First. King Coronation. Ugyen Wangchuck is crowned as the first Druk Gyalpo (Dragon King) of Bhutan, establishing the Wangchuck dynasty
History
Bhutan's National Day on December 17 commemorates the coronation of Ugyen Wangchuck as the first Druk Gyalpo (Dragon King) in 1907, establishing the Wangchuck dynasty that continues to rule Bhutan today. Before unification under the Wangchuck dynasty, Bhutan was composed of multiple fiefdoms and territories controlled by various local lords. The Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal unified Bhutan in the 17th century under a theocratic government, but after his death, the country fragmented into competing territories. In the late 19th century, British India expanded its influence over Bhutan's foreign affairs through treaties. Recognizing the need for centralized rule, Bhutan's leaders selected Ugyen Wangchuck as the first king, crowning him on December 17, 1907. This established Bhutan as a unified monarchy and ended centuries of feudal fragmentation. December 17 celebrates the foundation of modern Bhutan and the beginning of the Wangchuck dynasty's rule over the Himalayan kingdom.
