Basant Panchami (or Vasant Panchami) marks the arrival of spring and is dedicated to Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music, and the arts. It is celebrated with yellow colors, kite flying, and worship of Saraswati.

History

An ancient Hindu festival mentioned in Puranic texts, celebrated on the fifth day of the bright half of the lunar month of Magha. The color yellow symbolizes the mustard fields in bloom across northern India and the vibrancy of the new season.

How It's Celebrated

Wear yellow clothes, fly kites, worship Saraswati (especially students and musicians place books/instruments before her), enjoy seasonal sweets, and welcome the longer, warmer days of spring. In some regions it is also associated with romantic and festive spring celebrations.
