History
Bahrain achieved independence from Britain on August 14, 1971, ending a century-long relationship as a British protectorate. The Al Khalifa dynasty has ruled Bahrain since the 18th century, and Britain established a protectorate relationship through treaties in 1820, 1861, and 1880 that gave Britain control over Bahrain's foreign affairs in exchange for protection. Following the British withdrawal from the Persian Gulf in 1971, Bahrain declared independence on August 14, 1971, becoming an independent emirate. Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa became the emir of the independent State of Bahrain. The discovery of oil in 1932 transformed Bahrain's economy and accelerated the move toward independence. December 16, the date of another national celebration, commemorates the first session of Bahrain's first parliament in 1973. August 14 marks Bahrain's emergence as a sovereign nation after over 150 years of British influence.
