days to go

Memorial Day, the last Monday of May, is a U.S. federal holiday honoring military service members who died in service. It also marks the unofficial beginning of summer with gatherings and travel.

History

Began after the Civil War as 'Decoration Day' when people adorned graves of the fallen with flowers. The first wide observance was May 30, 1868. Expanded after WWI to all wars. Moved to the last Monday in 1971 to create a long weekend.

How It's Celebrated

Visit cemeteries or memorials and place flags/flowers, attend services and parades, fly the flag at half-staff until noon, watch the National Memorial Day Concert, thank living veterans and Gold Star families, and use the weekend for remembrance as well as rest and recreation.
