History
Albania declared independence from the Ottoman Empire on November 28, 1912, marking the birth of modern Albania. After nearly five centuries of Ottoman rule, Albanian nationalists organized and convened the Albanian Declaration of Independence in Vlorë. Ismail Qemali presided over the assembly that proclaimed Albania as an independent, autonomous state. The declaration was a significant moment following the Balkan Wars, which had weakened Ottoman control in the region. The independence of Albania faced challenges from neighboring states that sought to partition Albanian territory, but through international negotiations at the London Peace Conference, Albania's borders were internationally recognized. November 28 remains a national holiday, celebrating Albanian sovereignty and the efforts of independence leaders who unified the Albanian people after centuries of foreign domination.
