Aid el-Fithr
Friday, March 20, 2026
Aid el-Fithr is celebrated in Burundi with much religious fervour and general merriment. The national holiday comes on the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal, immediately following the holy month of Ramadan and month-long period of fasting, prayer and devotion. It is one of the most important of all Muslim commemorations. In 2027, Aid el-Fithr falls on Tuesday 9 March. The holiday will be on Saturday 26 February in 2028. Muslims are commanded to fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan, but they are banned from fasting when the month of Shawwal arrives. It is considered as wrong to fast on Aid El-Fithr as to fail to fast in the previous month. For Aid El-FIthr, there is a special prayer people recite in mosques, at home, or in open fields. Many in Burundi will attend prayer meetings where they make the recitations. They will also listen to sermons at the local mosque and head home to spend a day feasting and fellowshipping with friends and relatives.
