Africa Day
Monday, May 25, 2026
Every 25 May is Africa Day, an international holiday celebrating the founding of the pan-Africanist Organisation of African Unity (OAU) back in 1963. In Zimbabwe, Africa Day is also a national public holiday. In 2027, Africa Day falls on Tuesday 25 May. The holiday will be on Thursday 25 May in 2028. In 2001, the OAU was replaced by the African Union. Real union among African states has not fully materialised. However, the pan-African movement that sprang up after World War II in conjunction with the individual independence movements across the continent is not entirely dead. Thus, there are still some special events held and popular efforts to remember the vision of African unity, democracy, and peace every 25 May in Zimbabwe.
