25 January Revolution Day

25 January Revolution Day commemorates the beginning of protests in 2011 that eventually led to the resignation of 30-year ruling Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. In 2027, 25 January Revolution Day falls on Monday 25 January. The holiday will be on Tuesday 25 January in 2028. Part of the “Arab Spring”, the 2011 protests against Mubarak began on 25 January in Tahrir Square in Cairo. Mubarak’s party had ruled the country since 1976, and he seemed to have a firm grip on power. But a million people led an 18-day long protest against him that eventually toppled his regime. On 29 January, president Mubarak announced he would resign, but that did not convince the demonstrators to go home. On 11 February, he finally did resign, and that led to the protest being instantly transformed into a celebration. It is estimated that over 5,000 people died in the two and a half week long “revolution” of 2011. Sometimes, the protests turned violent, and sometimes, the government turned violent in an attempt quell protesters. But ultimately, Egypt had a new president and entered a new era politically due to the effects of the 25 January Revolution.
